[Abraham] Lincoln, politics, rumor of Missouri joining the Confederacy, learning to shoot pistols, troop movements, war news, fire in downtown Charleston, S.C., the Ladies Society for Clothing, and family and social activities. Including entries, 20 Aug. 1861, re drowning death of family friends, illness among soldiers, and Palmetto Guard; entry, 3 Sept. 1861, re free people of color collecting money for the Soldiers Relief Society; entry, 14-22 Apr. 1865, re staying in Sumter, S.C., possible Yankee invasion, rumors of war atrocities, surrender by [Robert E.] Lee, and assassination of [Abraham] Lincoln; and letter, 7 Feb. 1971, explaning division of diary between Duke University and the University of South Carolina.
